I DLed and installed xchat. I thought an alias would be put into applications, but it wasn't. When I tried to start xchat from a terminal I got the following messages:

Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by C library
Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib, locale set to C
Gdk-WARNING **: can not set locale modifiers
Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
[1] Exit 1 xchat

I have no idea what to do to run xchat. Could someone please advise?

A second question about xchat, and these parted apps... Do all of them require that X11 be installed?

Thanks.

xchat is a program designed for the x11 interface(or environment whatever you want to call it) so ya, it needs it. I think there's a macosX bianry out there tho for osx.

To use Xchat you need to get XFree86 http://macosx.forked.net/ports/XFree86-4.1-OSX.tar.gz . (uncompress it then run ./install.sh from the terminal in the XFree directory.) See www.xfree86.org for more information.

It looks like you are already logged in as root, so try:
code:

chmod +x ./install.sh
./install.sh

(I'll be putting up a rootless xfree pkg in the next few weeks)

are you starting xchat from Terminal.app? If so, try starting it from an Xterm in Xfree86 (Xdarwin).

I've installed your XFree86 package twice now.. making sure I didn't everything right.. I'll paste it just so you can see..

Welcome to the XFree86 4.1.0 installer

You are strongly advised to backup your existing XFree86 installation
before proceeding. This includes the /usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11
directories. The installation process will overwrite existing files
in those directories, and this may include some configuration files
that may have been customised.

If you are installing a version different from 4.1.0, you
may need an updated version of this installer script.

Updating the fonts.dir file in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc...

You appear to have a termcap file: /usr/share/misc/termcap
This should be edited manually to replace the xterm entries
with those in /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/etc/xterm.termcap

Note: the new xterm entries are required to take full advantage
of new features, but they may cause problems when used with
older versions of xterm. A terminal type 'xterm-r6' is included
for compatibility with the standard X11R6 version of xterm.

If you are going to use rstart and /usr/X11R6/bin isn't in the
default path for commands run remotely via rsh, you will need
a link to rstartd installed in /usr/bin.

You must have /usr/X11R6/bin/ in your PATH. (this will probably fix your xdarwin problem also). See: http://macosx.forked.net/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=000001

code:
------------------------------------------------------------------------

export PATH="/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/X11R6/bin"
------------------------------------------------------------------------
to /etc/profile. Open a new shell for the changes to take effect.

I do not have a profile in my /etc dir

Ok, i added:

setenv MANPATH "${MANPATH}:/usr/X11R6/man"
setenv PATH "${PATH}:/usr/X11R6/bin"

to my .tcshrc and it worked..

Now for an Xchat question.. Making the Window Transparent in the Settings brings up an error:

" Unable ot get root window pixmap!

You may need to use esetroot or Gnome control-center to set your background"

I don't want to use an image, just a transparent black bg.

Im not sure if you mean tranparent or tint, but for TINT you need;

gdk-pixbuf-0.11.0
gdk-pixbuf-devel-0.11.0

You NEED the devel one,and both to be installed before you compile xchat so it can find the dep. If they werent before you need to recompile xchat for the tint to work. The Precompiled binary for darwin wont wok, you ahve to compile it yourself with gdk-pixbuf packages installed.

I had that problem in fBSD a while ago and realised tey werent installed. recompiled, and all was fine. Again, this is for TINT (i'm not sure if thats what you were talking about - just trying to help out)

Hi, yes i have managed it to use xchat.
Your problem is, that you have to set the display first: add this to your .bashrc or whatever shell you use.

DISPLAY="0:0"; export Display

I use xchat with XDarwin and OroborOSX and i have to start OroborOSX first.

Good luck Selket
