I tried the following:

make --> returns:
gcc swftest.c -o swftest libswf.a -lm
/usr/bin/ld: table of contents for archive: libswf.a is out of date; rerun ranlib(1) (can't load from it)

So, I ran ranlib on libswf.a, which said:
ranlib: warning for library: /usr/local/src/flash/dist/libswf.a the table of contents is empty (no object file members in the library define global symbols)

... okay.

I then ran make again:

gcc swftest.c -o swftest libswf.a -lm
/usr/bin/ld: warning empty table of contents: libswf.a (can't load from it)
